Speaker Resume . . .

Karen Sparks

Education/Experience - I have a degree in Computer Science & Technology (1976) and have been part owner a computer consulting business since 1981. As a system analyst for the past 32 years, I have worked with the government and private sector, developing micro-computer based applications, training, and managing projects. From 1994-1998, I served on the Board of Directors of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce. Since 1996, I have been involved in the education system as a volunteer, school council executive, office administrator and librarian. In 1996, my business partner, decided that this new Internet venue, was the path that our business should pursue. Since then our company has developed many income generating websites and also numerous client websites. My business responsiblities include office management, bookkeeping, internet design, multi-media publications, desktop publishing and Internet training. As of 2005, I am a part-time librarian at a local public school. Two of my many passions in life are reading and working with children so this part-time position allows me to share my joy of books and expand the minds of the students.

Why Do I Do This?

My path in life has always been in the education field in some form or another. Being involved with the Internet since it's conception, has provided me with the knowledge and resources that I am passionate about passing on to parents and children. As a part-time librarian and parent, I am aware of how our young are utilizing the Internet and cell phones. Many are still very naive and entrusting and some use this resource as another form of bullying. The Internet is an open highway of information (good and bad), that with a bit of awareness, parents and children can make the right choices when surfing, communicating or publishing on the web. When I hear young adolescents taking their life because they are being cyberbullied, it just breaks my heart. I will continue to spread the message to youth so that they understand the consequences of cyberbullying and also, that they have a whole life ahead of them that is worth experiencing.
