Understanding Cyber Privacy and Copyrights

Most people are aware of the Internet’s benefits, but not everyone is aware of how the Internet can threaten personal privacy and the steps you can take to protect your privacy in cyberspace. There are some simple steps you can take to safeguard your own privacy, and you do have certain protections under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.
The Parent's Role in protecting their children's privacy
- Teach your children to: NEVER submit their name, age, address, or phone number online. Always use a computer nickname. NEVER submit information such as school names, friends information, family information or community events.
- Become educated with the tools that your children are going to use or are currently using (Social Networking Sites, MSN Messenger, IM, Cell Phones (texting), Email))
Get Privacy Wise.
- Start when your children are young and first time users of the Internet. Educate them on privacy and copyrighting in an age appropriate explanation. - Talk to your teens - not at them. Sit down with them. Patience and understanding go a long way.
